🦡 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
The year is off to a rocky start here in Los Angeles County. Several tight-knit communities, including Altadena, a few miles from my home, have been devastated by winter wildfires—driven by fossil-fuel-caused drought and unusually strong winds. These local climate impacts and similar events worldwide continue to inspire my partnership with Subject to Climate and the climate science coverage on TKSST.com.
Luckily, our home only lost power for a few days, and ash cleanup has been minimal. To support those affected by the LA fires, visit School Library Journal, KQED, and these underfunded GoFundMe campaigns for donation opportunities.
Links from my week:
• Teaching Students to Use Failures Productively in Pre-K: These strategies help young students think about failure as a learning tool instead of a disappointment.
• Kristin Ziemke | Doodle & Chat with Friends, an hour-long video conversation with Learning Innovation Specialist (and TKSST friend) Kristin Ziemke.
• Common Sense Education Free Lesson Collections: Curated lesson plans and supporting materials by topic or grade.
• Librarians and Allies Must Act to Secure the Future of Libraries and Intellectual Freedom. Experts share tactics and advice for the upcoming fight with School Library Journal.
• As a Climate Scientist, I Knew It Was Time to Leave Los Angeles by JPL scientist and former Altadena resident Peter Kalmus, a New York Times Op-Ed which “he says was toned down by the paper’s editors when he attempted to explain that fossil fuel companies’ investment in climate change denial and normalization has only accelerated the pace of unprecedented large-scale climate disasters.”
• The Teacher-Friendly Guide to Climate Change from the Paleontological Research Institution, a 294-page handbook that “includes both the basics of climate change science and perspectives on teaching a subject that has become socially and politically polarized.”
Thank you, as always, for reading and supporting TKSST. Find recent videos below! ⬇️ Stay safe. — Rion
