👻 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
🍠 Including kids in meal preparation from a young age connects them to food and family, instills responsibility and confidence, and passes along lifelong skills. There's also something special that happens when kids see where ingredients come from. Watching cranberries float, finding out where vanilla and cinnamon come from, learning why winter carrots are sweeter, or discovering that they can make an easy pomodoro pasta dinner with tomatoes can all make an impression.
Holiday cooking is a great opportunity for kids to help with making meals and learn through hands-on experience. Baking cookies, pies, and breads builds early number and sequencing skills, while harvest and recipe videos introduce ideas about agriculture, science, history, and culture. Making homemade pickles becomes a chemistry lesson about acids, osmosis, and how ingredients transform over time. Even simple tasks like measuring reinforce skills in math, observation, and hand–eye coordination.
Empanadas, ratatouille, trenette al pesto, mac and cheese, a French carrot salad, or an easy baked ziti! When kids understand the time and care that go into each ingredient, cooking can be less of a chore and more of a connection—to the food, to each other, and to the traditions we're creating together.
