🌌 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
🧩 What helps us navigate difficulties with fortitude and resilience in times of uncertainty? I often think of Bruce Feiler's 2013 New York Times article The Stories That Bind Us. It explains that families who tell stories about their histories—especially those of overcoming past challenges—raise more resilient children.
Feiler’s research shows that kids who know their family's "oscillating narrative" (the ups and downs, successes and setbacks) develop more durable emotional resources for facing life's inevitable hardships. He writes, "The more children knew about their family's history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned."
This finding aligns with what we aim to do with TKSST—tell important stories, spark meaningful conversations between generations, learn together, share that time, model problem-solving and teamwork, and build connections to our lives and experiences that help our children develop what researchers call a strong "intergenerational self."
In arduous moments, this sense of purpose and belonging to something larger than ourselves becomes a crucial anchor, reminding us that difficulties are part of every meaningful story—including our own. - Rion
