🍕 WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
🌌 What would the night sky look like above your home without light pollution? This question came to mind when I saw this photo comparing an average suburban night to a power outage. Have I ever seen such a stark real-life comparison of the sky above someone’s house?
Dark skies are measured on a Bortle Scale, ranging from 8/9 (city sky) to 1 (excellent dark sky). Surprisingly, about 80% of North Americans can’t see the Milky Way from where they live. Has how we think and feel changed now that so many of us don't have that dark sky experience? What would it be like to feel like you're standing on the edge of the universe?
If you want to explore light pollution with your kids, TKSST offers several conversation starters, including Puffling Patrol, Animated Light, and What happened to the Milky Way? DarkSky International also provides resources for educators.
🕯️ More from my week: Nat Geo has a helpful Key Concept worksheet, and via Kottke, The Atlantic posits that Lighthouse Parents Have More Confident Kids: “Sometimes, the best thing a parent can do is nothing at all.”
