šŸ‘‚ WHAT TO WATCH (AND HEAR) THIS WEEK:

TKSST's mission centers on helping parents and educators find trusted, engaging videos that spark curiosity and a love of learning. The video collection can also support students as they develop critical thinking skills for understanding and participating meaningfully in their world.

For video viewing in education, I like flipped learning expert Jon Bergmann’s idea of using the verb "interact" instead of "watch"—it emphasizes active engagement over passive consumption and sets up effective teaching strategies for critical thinking: See-Think-Wonder to build observation and analytical reasoning, Think-Pair-Share to explore multiple perspectives, video-adapted Text Connections to deepen personal relevance, "I Used to Think... Now I Think..." to reveal thinking shifts, and more.

Links from my week include:

šŸŒ Cultivating a Culture of Active Hope from seeding-action.org, ASTC’s climate initiative for science and technology centers. It also includes links and perspectives relevant to the classroom and parenting at home.

šŸŽ§ From Brains On: Understanding big fires and big feelings. Scroll for their recommended links and resources.

šŸŽ§ On a different note, I’m very excited about the Vera Rubin Observatory, a new telescope in Chile that’s turning on this year. It has the largest camera ever built and should ā€œcompletely transform our catalog of outer solar system objects.ā€ This includes potentially finding Planet Nine, a hypothetical planet that some scientists think might be influencing the orbits of distant objects through its gravitational pull. SciAm’s Science Quickly podcast has a new episode about it.
